Feature & Follow, #29

It's time once again for the Feature and Follow Blog Hop hosted by Parajunkee's View and Alison Can Read? The Feature and Follow Blog Hop is an excellent chance to connect with other bloggers and answering questions about our favorite books. Here's this week's question:

Confess your blogger sins! Is there anything as a newbie blogger that you've done, that as you gained more experience you were like - oops?

There have been a few things that I've done that I realized afterwards I shouldn't have. The one that caused my biggest anxiety was using a picture for my header that weren't mine. I just did a general search for images, found a cute hat image and used it in my header. I did a cursory search to try to find who owned the image and used it without specific permission. I realized pretty quickly that I needed something of my own and came up with the idea for my new header and commissioned a terrific artist to bring it to life.

The other thing that I've really learned from was to do some research before accepting a review request. When I first started (and I'll admit even now) I would get so excited when I was contacted to do a review and I would pretty much say yes to everything without knowing anything about the author, genre, book, etc. I don't think I gave some of those early reviews the justice they deserved because they were in a genre that I don't usually read. When I get a review now, I do some research and determine if it's a good fit for my blog.

What about you? Have you made any oops?

How does this work? First you leave your name here on this post, (using the linky tools — keep scrolling!) then you create a post on your own blog that links back to this post (easiest way is to just grab the code under the #FF picture and put it in your post) and then you visit as many blogs as you can and tell them “hi” in their comments (on the post that has the #FF image). You follow them, they follow you. Win. Win. Just make sure to follow back if someone follows you!

What sets this Hop apart from others, is our Feature. Each week we will showcase a Featured Blogger, from all different genres and areas. Who is our Feature today? Find out below. Just remember it is required, if you participate, to follow our Features and you must follow the hosts (Parajunkee's View & Alison Can Read) as a courtesy. How do you follow someone? Well, if you have a preference, state it in your #FF post. A lot of blogs are transitioning to WordPress in which they do not have the luxury of GFC, so an RSS subscription is appreciated or if you choose an email subscription. If you don’t have GFC please state in your post how you would like to be followed.

  1. I have definitely been tempted to look for super cute images, etc. to change my blog. I started my book review blog in December and just decided I'd use my own image of my pets for now until I have extra cashflow to pay someone to help me design it better, etc!

Got here by way of FF. New follower! Hello! And I absolutely LOVE that header and your site design :)

  2. Oh, Google images is evil! There are so many cute images on there and if you're inexperienced you can get into so much trouble for using them without permission. I had the same problem with my first batch of reviews. I was more focused on OMG FREE FREE FREE book than if I'd actually like it.

  3. Most people don't understand images and copyright and think that because they see it on google or tumblr they can use it. It's hard to pass up reviews. I always feel bad if I have to turn them down, but then remind myself that if my interest isn't in it, I'm not helping.

    1. I feel bad turning reviews down too Jessica, but you're right, if I'm not really interested then I'm not helping.

  4. I waited so many years to find someone who I can afford to pay for a blog header hehe. I'm glad I waited, I love my new header and button!

I agree that it's hard to pass up reviews! But sometimes we really have to...

    1. Once you can finally afford that special design (and it can take a while) it makes it that much more yours doesn't it Goldie? I've enjoyed my new one so much!

  5. I'm curious what kind of research do you do? Or do you just check if you think you'd like the book? Like yourself I still get quite excited when Authors contact me requesting me to review their books. I do read the synopsis but apart from that I don't do anything else before denying or accepting their request LOL

    My Feature & Follow Friday.

    Have a great weekend!

    1. When I first started, I would just read the book blurb, but sometimes that can be a bit misleading. You think it's one thing but it's really not.

So now, I usually go to the author's website and poke around a bit. Do they have more info on the book, characters, series, etc? Do they have a blog section? If they do that can give you an idea of their writing style and if you'll enjoy it. I'll also head over to Goodreads and check out some of their other books (if they have any), does anyone I know have them marked as to be read? I'll try to skim a few reviews and see if they have any quotes from the authors book. Again, that gives me an idea of their writing style. I try not to read the reviews for the book I'm being asked to review (I want to form my own opinion) but I do look at what else they've written.

  6. I still get super excited when I get a review request. When I first started blogging I accepted one for a book that I couldn't even finish, so after that I've been super careful. But it is kind of flattering when someone asks for a request, whether or not it's a book I would normally read.

    1. I agree that it's reallly flattering to be asked to review a book Quinn. My first thought isn't even Oh I'll get a free book, it's more, you want ME to give my opinion-how cool! :D And yeah, after a few books that I had to struggle through, I'm getting more careful about what I accept.

  7. Great answers. Yeah pictures were my thing too. I sort of did the review thing as well. I was contacted by a blog tour service and I figured, because everything looked very official, it must be a reputable book. After accepting two or three review requests, I realized it was a service for indie authors. Not that I have anything against them, but 2 out of 3 reviews I accepted were terribly written and edited, so I learned to do research as well. Thanks for visiting my blog. Happy Friday!

    1. I signed up with a blog tour service that was similar Liesel. Everything they sent was for a book I wasn't interested in. I finally unsubscribed because I hadn't participated in a single tour they offered. I have no problem with indie authors and have done several reviews and tours with them but I do more research when I haven't heard of the author or book before to make sure it's going to be a good fit. Thanks for stopping by!

  8. I have stated on my blog that I cannot accept review requests right now. My TBR is overflowing as it is, and I have a little problem with Netgalley... they accept me far more often than I anticipate :D

Thanks for stopping by my FF post earlier Traci :) Have a fantastic Friday and a wonderful weekend.

    1. I'm just about to the point where I'm going to have to put up that I'm not accepting requests right now. I'm getting a bit backed up. So far, I've let the author know what the wait time is and they've all been okay with that, but if I don't keep my finger off the request button then I'll have to back off until I get caught up :) Have a great weekend Lexxie!

  9. Hi Tracy! New GFC Follower!

Yea I can relate to your answer!

Accepting reviews intelligently is something I'm finding myself having to sort through as well. I have had a bigger influx of emails lately and it's been a challenge to determine which ones to say yes or no to. I'm glad I'm not alone in encountering this challenge.

  10. Waves- I'm a new follower via FF. I just learned of this great posting blog hop today and I'm very glad. I love the design of your blog.

I can see where doing more research for reviews would be a great idea. It's crazy the things we can look back on and cringe.

  12. Old follower here! I think that we all make some mistakes as we learn how to blog. I never thought about doing research when getting review requests...I will have to do that in the future!! Hope you are having a good weekend.

  13. I agree with what you said about being more selective about choosing what books to read from authors and whether or not it fits with your blog. I have had some authors ask me to review their books, but luckily I've been cautious about accepting, because I want to make sure it would be a good fit first.
